3Com® NBX® 100 Communications System
Feature-rich, easy-to-use business telephone system for growing businesses
and enterprise branch offices
The NBX 100 communications system comprises the business telephone set and the system chassis.
Growing businesses require an affordable, flexible telecommunications platform
that provides no-compromise telephony services and functionality while
minimizing the day-to-day operation and maintenance headaches associated with
conventional telephone systems.
The 3Com® NBX® 100 communications system—the world’s only reliable local
area network (LAN)/wide area network (WAN)-based business telephone system—does
exactly that. With the NBX 100 system, small to mid-sized companies and branch
offices have access to feature-rich call processing, toll-quality voice
communications, and all the benefits of an Ethernet LAN in a single converged
network.
By combining voice and data on a single network infrastructure, the NBX 100
system eliminates the cost of installing two separate systems—one for voice
and one for data. This offers greater scalability, simplifies administration,
and significantly reduces overall cost of ownership. An organization can grow
from 1 to 200 nodes—with up to 100 central office (CO) lines—without
wholesale system replacements, and its network can expand incrementally to
include remote offices, as well as remote and home-based workers.
And because the NBX 100 system supports standards-based Quality of Service (QoS),
including IEEE 802.1p/Q, IP Type of Service (TOS), and IETF-defined DiffServ,
organizations can prioritize and expedite both voice and data traffic on the
LAN/WAN to ensure crystal clear voice communications throughout the enterprise.
An Integrated Platform
By combining voice and data services over a single Ethernet LAN infrastructure, the 3Com NBX 100 system
does more than simply eliminate duplicate cabling. Companies that do not have a LAN can reap the benefits of
networking, including file sharing, e-mail, print sharing, and the ability for shared Internet connection on a
company wide basis.
Far-Reaching Benefits
By providing a single, voice/data LAN infrastructure, the NBX 100 system
delivers a wealth of benefits far beyond traditional PBX systems. For example,
unlike customers with dedicated PBX ports, NBX 100 system customers can choose
the wiring, media, and network products that best meet their needs and budget.
LANs can also be expanded using new technologies, such as wireless Ethernet, to
connect distant buildings. NBX 100 system customers can connect new facilities
to the network—even if they’re thousands of miles away.
High Availability and Reliability
The 3Com NBX 100 communications system delivers 99.99 percent reliability—that
means only one minute of scheduled downtime occurs for every 1,000 operating
hours. Even though the NBX 100 system shares the LAN infrastructure of switches
and hubs with the data network, it operates independently of computers, servers,
and network operating systems. This ensures that the phone system continues to
function even with a network server failure. Because the NBX 100 system is an
open, standards-based platform, it will work with any customer’s existing
desktop computers, servers, and Ethernet hubs, switches, and routers.
Simple Management and Comprehensive Control
In the past, small to mid-sized businesses and branch offices of large companies were forced to settle for low-end
PBX solutions to control costs, often trading features and functionality for price and reducing administrative
overhead. This put them at a disadvantage in a world where companies depend on communications technologies
to be more responsive to customers, improve productivity, and conduct business more efficiently with suppliers
and partners. The NBX 100 system eliminates this disadvantage due in part to the following capabilities.
Ease of Administration
The 3Com NBX 100 communications system puts control of the phone system directly
in the hands of administrators and users. For the system administrator, the NBX
NetSet™ administration utility delivers a true breakthrough simple, system
wide management. With the NetSet utility, all routine administrative functions
are performed via a standard Web browser, such as Netscape Navigator or
Microsoft Internet Explorer. With minimal training, anyone can learn how to add
new users and make system wide modifications in minutes. Adding a new user is as
simple as plugging in an NBX 100 business telephone and making a few menu
choices. Because the NBX 100 business telephone is an intelligent device that
retains its identity, users can easily change office locations—anywhere on the
company network. What’s more, administration is Web-based, so administrators
can make changes from any desktop system on the network, locally or remotely.
Automatic Route Selection (ARS) Minimizes Costs and Improves Efficiency
Uncontrolled telephone use can be a major expense for growing businesses. The
NBX 100 system solves this problem by providing a comprehensive dial plan that
lets organizations route calls based on up to 32,768 ARS parameters, thereby
enabling each call to be connected via the most cost-effective line. When a user
places a call, the system can determine whether that user is allowed to place
such a call. If the call is allowed, the system can instantly route the call to
the appropriate line—T1, local analog, or H.323 (via Voice-over-IP across a
corporate WAN backbone)—by comparing the number dialed to the rules
established in the dial plan.
Call Detail Reporting (CDR)
In addition to the dial plan, the NBX 100 system controls costs by allowing
users to assign account codes—even to active calls—while tracking usage in
CDR. For example, if a partner in a law office receives a call from a client,
the partner can press a feature button and enter the client’s account number
into the system for recording and billing purposes.

Call Detail Recording (CDR) allows you to track and report on phone usage.
Time-of-Day Service Modes
Organizations can program their NBX 100 system to respond differently at up to
four different times of day. Each of these customer-defined service modes—such
as Open, Closed, Lunch, and Other—can be linked to specific hours of
operation. Each service mode can have its own automated attendant greeting and
call routing path. Although these service modes are automated, they can be
overridden manually. For example, a receptionist can press a button to put the
system in Lunch mode at any time, and all callers can be routed to a secondary
receptionist position.
Easy Operation for Users
The 3Com NBX 100 communications system offers users unprecedented ease of use. Preprogrammed buttons
make it easy to conference, transfer, redial, and hold calls. One touch provides instant access to Voice
Messaging Services, Speed Dial, and Forward to Voice Mail. These capabilities are complemented by a two-line
alphanumeric display that provides additional information, including Caller ID. Users can call other in-house
users by scrolling through a directory on the LCD display and pressing a soft key. Each NBX 100 business
telephone also includes a built-in speakerphone with hands-free answer service, and users can customize their
telephones to their individual preferences using programmable buttons.
Flexible User Connectivity
No single phone set is appropriate for every kind of user, and most companies
want the ability to plug analog devices such as fax machines and speakerphone
adjuncts into their voice/data networks. That’s why the NBX 100 system
supports a wide range of devices in addition to the NBX 100 business telephone.
Call center workers can have the hands-free comfort of using a headset and NBX
pcXset PC telephone. Internal service people and in-demand supervisors have the
freedom to leave their desks and still stay connected via ordinary cordless
phones. Companies can save money by putting inexpensive analog phones in common
areas, such as kitchens and lobbies. Customers can easily connect these and
other analog devices to the NBX 100 system via the NBX Analog Adapter or Analog
Terminal Card.
Free Computer Telephony Integration (CTI) Services
The 3Com NBX 100 system includes free TAPI enabling software, allowing end users
to take advantage of the many benefits of CTI. The 3Com NBX 100 system supports
TAPI 2.X, the Microsoft Telephony Application Programming Interface standard,
which enables customers to integrate third-party CTI programs for advanced
office applications, such as customer relationship management. For example,
companies can take advantage of applications that will allow customer service
and order entry personnel to get instant screen “pops” of customer records
and history as incoming calls are received. Also, CTI allows users to make calls
directly from their computer screen—via simple point and click!

The NBX 100 system supports CTI services, allowing you to dial calls from your popular desktop applications,
such as Microsoft Outlook.
Flexible Call Routing and Management
Whether a business operates a formal call center or an informal group of sales/service representatives, the timely
and efficient management of inbound calls is key to continued success and customer satisfaction. The 3Com
NBX 100 system supports these critical needs with an array of sophisticated call routing and management
features.
Multiple and Multilevel Automated Attendant
When callers reach an automated attendant, they want to be able to identify and
select their calling destination—for example, the customer service department—as
quickly as possible. Too many menu choices can be difficult to remember and too
time consuming. That’s why the NBX 100 system supports multilevel automated
attendant menus. Using the NBX NetSet administration utility, organizations can
create up to 20 levels of main menus and sub menus that enable callers to route
themselves quickly and accurately to the individual or workgroup they want to
reach.
3Com NBX 100 system customers can also customize inbound routing by creating up
to 99 automated attendants. Each inbound line or DID (direct inward dialing)
number can have its own custom greeting (including time-dependent greetings),
main menu, and submenu selection choices. This lets organizations segregate
traffic by office location, department, or division. Even two business entities
sharing office staff can each have its own automated attendant.
Programmable Call Center Hunt Groups
The NBX 100 system includes support for both linear and circular hunt groups (up to 48 groups) for call center
applications, such as customer service, technical support, and order entry. With linear hunting, users are
organized into groups that share a common group extension. Inbound calls are always handled in the same
manner, following a sequential, predefined (top down) order. In circular hunt groups, calls are handled
dynamically, delivered automatically to the next available member in the group; this helps ensure that no calls are
missed and all users share the call load. If no member of the group is available, the system can stack the callers in
a queue or provide alternate coverage. Hunt groups are also password protected.
Calling Groups
Growing businesses often have limited administrative staff and expect employees
to share the role of receptionist. With the 3Com NBX 100 communications system,
such companies can create up to 48 calling groups to manage call flow—even if
an automated attendant answers the telephone. For example, if callers want to
speak directly to a person instead of leaving a voice mail message, they can
press “O” on the automated attendant menu. This can trigger an alert to
multiple individuals in a calling group to ensure that the call is answered
promptly. Calling groups may also handle more than one alerting call at a time.
Proven Best-of-Breed Technology
The NBX 100 communications system is a breakthrough product that harnesses
advanced 3Com technology to deliver a revolutionary voice/data solution for
small- to mid-sized companies and branch offices. By combining advanced voice
technology with 3Com’s global leadership in data networking solutions, the
3Com NBX 100 communications system enables growing companies to enjoy the same
rich communications environment as large enterprises—without the cost—all
while greatly simplifying the day-to-day operation of their communications
networks.
Migration Path to Unified Infrastructure and Integrated Applications
The best products are those that satisfy today’s needs while giving customers
the freedom and flexibility to integrate new applications in the future. One
such technology is the converged network model, where voice and data networks
are unified. Because the converged network model will offer significant cost and
management benefits to growing companies, 3Com has engineered the NBX 100 system
to enable the migration to converged networks. The 3Com NBX 100 communications
system is a logical first step for companies looking to integrate key components
of their voice and data networks today with a foundation for migrating to a
single, cohesive infrastructure in the future.
Small Office/Branch Office/Telecommuter Connectivity
The 3Com NBX 100 communications system is the ideal way to provide
full-featured, comprehensive business telephone services to organizations with
smaller/multiple remote offices and telecommuters. The NBX 100 system eliminates
the need for a dedicated PBX at each remote office. Instead, remote offices can
plug their NBX 100 business phones into a 3Com router, such as the OfficeConnect®
LAN Modem, and connect easily to the NBX
100 system at headquarters via a WAN. Besides reducing costs and simplifying
administration, this configuration gives remote users equal access to the
headquarters’ data network, telephony, and messaging services. Likewise,
telecommuters can connect to headquarters via a virtual private network (VPN)
for real-time telephony and voice messaging.
Headquarters and Satellite Office Connectivity
The 3Com NBX 100 communications system enables organizations with satellite offices to take advantage of
low-cost, high-quality Voice-over-IP services using the 3Com NBX ConneXtions H.323 gateway application.
Companies can replace costly tie-line facilities between locations and reroute intra-company telephone calls over
their WAN backbone, thereby further leveraging their WAN investment. With the NBX 100 system,
organizations can standardize on one business telephone system platform across all branch offices using any
WAN technology, including ISDN, ATM, T1, Frame Relay, xDSL, and cable modems, as well as wireless
Ethernet. The NBX 100 system also supports IGMP (IP multicasting) to deliver toll-quality audio across crowded
LANs/WANs when connecting to home and branch offices across the network backbone.

features and functionality of the NBX 100 system directly from a computer,
without using a separate telephone set. Users of the pcXset telephone software
place and receive calls directly from their PCs, using headphones or headsets
and the computer’s mouse and keyboard. NBX pcXset software is ideally suited
for call centers and informal call groups, such as sales and service. In
addition to providing the same features and user interface as the NBX 100
business telephone, pcXset software enables the use of shortcut keys to speed
call handling. NBX pcXset software runs on computers with Windows 95/98/NT
operating systems.

NBX ConneXtions Gateway
NBX ConneXtions is an H.323 gateway that enables organizations with NBX 100 systems to connect via IP
networks to other telephone systems equipped with H.323 gateways. By using the data network to connect
multiple locations, NBX ConneXtions provides the benefits of traditional telephone tie-line and off-premise
extension (OPX) circuits at a much lower cost. Unlike other H.323 gateways, NBX ConneXtions enables audio to
travel throughout the LAN and across the WAN as packetized audio, thus eliminating multiple digital-to-analog
conversions across the communications path. Other H.323 clients can log into the gateway to become
recognized extensions of the NBX 100 system.
Advanced PowerMail eXchange (APX) Messaging
Every NBX 100 communications system includes the APX messaging system, a set of powerful software tools
for call answering, routing, and messaging. In addition to conventional telephone messaging services, the APX
system supports unified messaging via the IMAP4 standard. Unified messaging provides a single, universal
in-box for both voice and e-mail messages, so users can better manage their work, prioritize tasks, and respond
quickly to business needs. Users can access, scan, play, and save voice messages on their computers using any
IMAP4-compatible e-mail client, such as Microsoft Outlook Express or Eudora. The NBX 100 system ships with
four automated attendant ports and 30 minutes of voice mail storage for free. The APX system can scale up to 12
automated attendant ports and 80 hours of storage via simple software upgrades.

Using standard applications such as Microsoft’s Outlook Express, you can
manage your voice mail messages just as you do your e-mail messages.
Automated Attendant Module
The APX Automated Attendant module is designed to answer every incoming call or serve as a backup when no
one is available to answer. Callers can choose to dial by extension, name, or department. To provide the
appropriate response at all hours, customers can generate a set of customized greetings and activate the
appropriate one based on the time of day. The Automated Attendant module is designed to answer calls quickly
and move them through the system without delay. Because it can answer as many as 12 calls simultaneously, it
allows growing businesses to respond effectively to fluctuating call volumes without adding additional staff.
The module also supports both multiple and multilevel automated attendant operations, enabling users and
departments to set up customized incoming call greeting and routing to suit their unique needs. Features include:
Up to 99 automated attendant greetings per system
Up to 20 submenus per automated attendant
Up to 12 menu choices per automated attendant menu
Programmable automated attendant trees via NetSet utility
NetSet setup and testing to ensure proper configuration before implementation

The NetSet utility makes setup and management of your multiple, multilevel automated attendant a snap!
Voice Messaging Module
The APX messaging module answers calls with personal greetings when a user is unavailable. Administrators
can program the system to forward callers to the APX messaging system immediately or after two to eight rings.
Message Notification and Retrieval.
The APX system alerts users to new messages via an LED “Message Waiting”
light on the NBX 100 telephone while the phone’s built-in display tells the
user the number of new messages. With the NBX 100 system, retrieving messages is
as simple as pressing the “MSG” button and entering a password.
Off-Site Notification and Retrieval.
When users are offsite, APX messaging can notify them of new messages via pager,
telephone, or cellular phone—no matter where they are. Voice messages can be
retrieved easily via any touchtone telephone.

The NBX 100 system will notify you of new messages via alternate numbers, including your pager.
User Control. With APX messaging,
each user has individual control over how calls and messages are handled. Users
can set up their own mailboxes; create personal greetings; and manage new and
old message folders with options to save, delete, reply, reply to all, and
forward with private and/or urgent labels. Users can also address messages by
name, extension, or distribution list for fast and easy messages to groups of
coworkers.
